UPDATED 11/20: Indiana The Dog and OSU v. UM

Next 15 on 15 - Discuss
D | Wednesday, November 29, 2006
Brooke and Craig have suggested that we do Top 15 Songs of 2006 for the December 15 on 15. This is an interesting idea, to be sure, but I am cautious about adopting it. I would like some discussion about the feasibility of this topic by all who are interested in participating (Brooke, Craig, Ruvym, Alex, and myself really is about it (maybe Ashley, Brad, and Kate)).

My concern is that I don't follow music closely enough to easily list 15 songs that came out this year. I would need to research songs via the internet to 1.compile a list of 15 and 2.make sure they actually came out this year. Having said that, I propose that we modify the list to be "A Top 15 Playlist for 2006." With this change, I can include any song that has become prominent on my playlist during 2006. For example, if I rediscovered the B-52's Love Shack this year, then I could include that on my list, right alongside JT's Sexy Back. This will allow me to create my Top 15 songs without worrying about their release date and will consequentially help me ignore my lack of musical savyness.

Discuss. If you don't like Brooke's idea or my suggestion, please present another idea. Craig has also suggested Top 15 Video Games, which we will do (
probably in January).

Nothing
D
Nothing is really happening. School is wrapping up. The dog is great and finally going potty outside (also getting bigger, I am told). But that is about it. I got nothing.

I do want to talk about the Next 15 on 15.

Dinner with Pat. We had pork for the main course with ceasar salad, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cresent rolls, and asparagus. It was delicious. Even better the second time (around 10PM).

Pat's room is the only place for pooping
D

So it's 1:30 in the morning and Pat is heading up to bed. He notices some pee in the upstairs hallway and announces that I should come clean it up. As I scrub the floor outside his room, we are talking about how funny it is that the dog always pees by his room. The door to his room has been closed all day, but is now open with Pat sitting at his desk working on his computer. I look at the dog and say, "Go pee on Pat." The dog walks into Pat's room, stands in the middle of the floor, and shits diarrhea everywhere. I look up and and start yelling, "Stop." Pat turns around and starts going, "Nooooo. Noooo." I rush in and start cleaning it up but I can't stop laughing uncontrollably. Pat is laughing too as he yells, "Clean it up. It smells. Clean it up. Oh my God." It smells sooo bad and stinks up the entire 2nd floor. As we yell and laugh the dog runs into the hallway to hide. Pat goes, "Where is he?" I say, "The hallway." Pat bolts from his desk into the hallway and starts chasing the dog screaming, "That's right. You better run."

Beat Michigan Recap
D | Monday, November 20, 2006
Ohio State - 42
Michigan - 39

Saturday November 18th, 2006

7:45AM - We woke up early to head down to campus for Kegs and Eggs. We had them at the Scarlet and Gray Cafe on High and Lane. Yum? No - the eggs were cold and the food was gross. It was perfect and exactly as expected.

9:00AM - Wondered over to the GameDay set and read sign after sign. I have to say, I was very impressed with the OSU student body and their creativity. Some of my favorite signs were, "Hey Tressel can I have a ride to Arizona? I hear you own a Carr" "Smith/Tressl in 2008" "Hart can't Fingerpaint" and "Ain't no cure for Laurenitis." They were many others, but I'll have to ask Ash to remember some more.

11:00AM - GameDay wraps up with Corso picking the Wolverines and we all go crazy chanting "Corso sucks" and other things. Ash and I head into St. Johns for Skull. It is packed and all the sections are already closed an hour and a half before the show starts. So we miss Skull.

11:30AM - Arrive at Eddie Gorge's Restaurant. There is a line and they are letting people in as people come out, 10 out 10 in. We get in about 15 minutes later. The place is obviously packed to capacity. We head to the bar and try to find space to lean against a wall or the bar. All space is at a premium.

12:00PM - Eddie comes out and people go crazy. He is sporting the "Ohio State Football is Everything" shirt. He jumps on the bar with a microphone and starts getting the crowd worked up. He tells the entire bar that he just bought us all shots. We rush up to the bar and grab a pre-poured shot and drink with Eddie and about 200 other people. I can now say that Eddie George bought me a shot.

1:00PM - Ashley makes friends with a group of women who have tickets to the game. As they are getting ready to leave their pager (for a table) goes off. Ashley aks if we can stand at the bar where they were standing and the lady offers Ashley the table. We gladly accept and ta-da, we now have beaten the 2 hour wait and we have a table. We sit and order food and watch the Penn State game.

2:00PM - Ashley and I realize how tired we are and debate trying to sleep by putting our heads on the table.

2:30PM - Buckeye Blitz coverage starts on Channel 6 and we begin to wake up.

3:30PM - ABC went to coverage of the game well before kickoff. We got to see the coinflip and other stuff. I realized how much they were treating this game like a championship.

3:45PM - Kickoff and game. The restaurant would play OSU music during comercial breaks. It was basically like being at the game. Everyone was glued to the TV and would cheer and boo and scream. People were yelling at the TV as if we were in the stands, doing Go Bucks cheers and De-Fense. It was nuts. And awesome. Other than the game, a few interesting things happened: I would hit people who stood infront of me blocking my view of the TV; some chicks wanted to set their nachos on our table and Ashley let them, much to my dismay; I made up for those girls setting their nachos on my table by spilling some guys beer on her later; we drank Lebatts and they have this new insulated can which would make the beer very cold but the outside not so much (Ashley was really excited about this).

5:30PM - Halftime. OSU leads 28-14. Ashley orders chocolate, chocolate cake. We eat it. The game starts again.

7:30PM - OSU wins and the place goes CRAZY. People are hugging and high-fiving and just going nuts. We all sing "We are the Champions." Enjoy this video of Ashley's rendition ("We are the champions, we are the champions, no time for MICHIGAN").

8:00PM - We walk all the way home (2.1 miles) and Ashley starts soliciting high fives. She has over 40 by the time we get home. The streets are jam packed with students and other fans. Everyone is yelling and cheering and singing. Campus is a zoo. If I weren't so tired, I would have probably enjoyed this scene much more.

8:30PM - We stop by a local mexican food place to get food. By the time we get home all I want to do is lay down and sleep. And the dog is going crazy because he has been inside all day.

Indiana Floppy Walden
D
I wanted to compile some information about Indy for everyone to read (and honestly, so I can go back and use this as a reference point later in life as I have done with some many other blog-worthy-events).

Indiana was the final result of a dog search that lasted about three weeks. Upon intense bargaining with my landlord, we agreed that I could get one dog under 25lbs provided I signed a lease extension for my third year of law school. I agreed and started looking for dogs, but quickly found that a full grown weight of only 25lbs would not allow me to get the type of dog I wanted. So I told him this and asked to return to our original lease. He initially agreed, only to call me back later that day and say, "You were being dumb. Get any dog you like." So that opened up the search.

Indy was originally called "Reno." He was part of a 5 pup little (3 males, 2 females) that was dropped off at the Capital Area Humane Society around October 20th. I found him online and Pat and I went out to visit and immediately put a "Hold" on him. We had one hold before us and upon expiration of that hold, he was ours. I went out and paid for him on a Monday November 13th. He lost his manhood on Tuesday and I took him home for the first day on Wednesday November 15th. I think I am going to celebrate this as his "birthday" since I don't really know when it is. His new name is Indiana Floppy Walden, but I call him Indy. Indiana from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, but not as a tribute to Harrison Ford, but because the Jones' named their dog Indiana ("We named the dog Indiana"). Floppy is because I let Pat pick his middle name and Pat loves Everybody Loves Raymond and apparently in one episode Ray wants to get a dog and name it Floppy (which Deborah vetoes). Walden is, well, obvious.

Today we had our first appointment with our vet, who lives less than a block away (which is really nice). He weighs 15 lbs and is about 3 months old. He is a male beagle mix (the vet thinks beagle/hound mix but she thinks probably a mix of a lot of things). Oh and he has fleas, which is common for pound dogs, but kind of gross. So now he gets special flea medicine.
To date, Indiana has two "issues" with civilized society. First, he is not housebroken. Second, he is scared of basically everything.

Indy is learning potty training, but currently will go potty ONLY at specific locations:

Pee - Pat's door way, the middle of the kitchen floor, the bathroom

Poop - Pat's room, the kitchen doorway/mat

When he starts to go, we yell to get him to stop then take him outside. Once outside, he refuses to go and we stand around looking at each other like, "Go potty" "What?" "Potty" "What?" "Potttt teeee" "What?" "Bathroom" "Oh, bathroom?" "Yes" "Yeah, no. But look at this stick I found." So after 30 minutes of standing around looking at each other, I bring him inside and as soon as I turn around, he finishes peeing. It's actually funny when you think about it, but not when you have to clean it up. In five days, he has peed outside only ONCE and that is because we spent over 2 hours outside on a 3.5 mile walk. I was so delighted when he finally peed, I think I cried a tear of happiness.

His second "issue" is really resolving itself quite nicely. When we first brought him home he was really shy and nervous. I think he had a touch of separation anxiety from leaving his brothers. He wouldn't play and would only lay still all curled up in a ball. Thankfully that only lasted about two days. Now he runs around like a crazy puppy all the time. He wags his tail a lot and is generally very happy. He is still nervous when outside on walks. Loud noises frighten him, big people frighten him, other dogs frighten him. I think he gets scared because he is young and small. So we are working on Manly Training - belching, farting, cat calls at appropriate hot women - that sort of thing.

15 on 15 - Top Travel Destinations
D | Thursday, November 16, 2006

Where in the world would I like to visit? Fun times. Do remember on this one, Alex and Brooke added the qualifier: "If you were given an all-expense paid trip to anywhere you wanted, what would your top 15 choices be? For us, this will naturally lower places that we've already been because we'd rather use the trip to go to places we have not been." I agreed with this idea and made my travel list accordingly.

Derek's Top 15 Travel Destinations

15. Seattle, Washington, USA
I don't exactly know why, but this is just one of those places I've always wanted to visit. I would love to camp and hike up there - maybe climb Mount Constance or Mount Olympus. And visit the traditional landmarks like the Space Needle and Pike's Market (where they throw the fish). Oh, and drink some coffee.

14. Paris, France
Why wouldn't you want to go to Paris? I mean, given how much I love fashion and all.

13. London, England
I've never been to London and would love to visit for a week or two. Ride the subways, visit Piccadilly Circus, Westminster, Downing Street, and others. I would love to see a British theatre show and ride a double decker bus. All the general touristy stuff would be neat to do.

12. US Theme Park Tour, Multiple, USA
So I cheated on my four of my "destinations." They are more "tours" than specific locations, none the less, I would love for someone to coordinate and pay for my expenses while on these "tours." A US Theme Park Tour would be fabulous. Two weeks on the road, driving cross country and stopping at a park a day to ride coasters. How fun would that be? I would try to hit up Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Six Flags in NJ, MA, and DC, Six Flags Magic Mtn in CA, Paramount's King's Dominion, Carowinds, and Great America, Knott's Berry Farm in CA, and of course Cedar Point and Kings Island.

11. College Stadium Tour, Multiple, USA
Same as above visiting college football stadiums: Michigan, Penn State, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Rose Bowl, Alabama, Auburn, USC, FSU, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Oklahoma. Those round out the top of my list.

10. The Moon, In orbit around Earth
Funny you say? Maybe in our life-time we will see passenger recreational trips to the Moon. And I would go. I can't tell you how incredible that would be. I would also like to visit Mars, but that may be less tenable.

9. Hong Kong, China
An impressive city boasting some of the world's tallest buildings. I don't know why, but I've always wanted to go there and just look around.

8. Cairo (Giza), Egypt
The Great Pyramids and the Sphinx. And a boat ride on the Nile.

7. Denali National Park, Alaska, USA
Home of the tallest peak on North America, Mount McKinley and a vast amount of natural resources. I think a summer trip that involved a lot of backpacking would be great. Also, I would love to summit Mount McKinley. You will see that this is the first of the world's tallest peaks I would like to climb. Guess the second?

6. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is the only place on my list where I have already been. I went on a school trip at the end of my senior year in high school. Barcelona was amazing. I would love to go back now that I am a little older and can explore the city a little more. I remember seeing the truly impressive Sagrada Familia church and Gaudi architecture Park. I would love the opportunity to return.

5. Sydney, Australia
Another location that I've always wanted to visit and just don't know why. I've always wanted to go to Australia and have some grand adventure. What? I don't really know, but it would sure be fun.

4. Caribbean Cruise, Multiple
Another one of my "tours". I've always wanted to take a cruise. Nothing too fancy, just the basic Caribbean cruise. Even the Bahamas would be fine. I'm not too picky, I just want to sail around on a really big boat for about 10 days and eat and drink myself into a relaxing stupor. Also I like snorkeling, so that would be cool to see some fish.

3. Yosemite National Park, California
I think Yosemite is probably the most interesting National Park in the United States (followed closely by the Grand Canyon, which I visited this summer). The rock formations are legendary: El Capitan, Half Dome, and Glacier Point. I would love to see some giant sequoias, beautiful waterfalls, and stunning views.

2. Mt. Everest, Nepal/China
The highest point in the world. Ever since we did a mock trial case a few years ago I have had a nagging little desire to give this a try. This would be more physical training and mental taxation than I can possibly imagine. And since I know it cost about $90k to mount the summit efforts, someone else will definitely have to pay for it.

1. The Appalachian Trail, Multiple, USA
Everyone knows that a little over a year ago I had grand plans to hike the Appalachian Trail. Make no mistake about it - I would very much like to complete the hike on day. What you make not know is how expensive the trek is. Most books I read suggested around $2k in expenses plus whatever opportunity costs you sacrifice for the 4 months away from work. So if someone wants to pick up those expenses then I will pack my bags tomorrow (after law school, that is).

---
Others receiving votes: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Honiara, Solomon Islands; Portland, Oregon, USA; Rome, Italy; Vatican City, Vatican; Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, USA; Dublin, Ireland; Venice, Italy

College football = box of chocolates
D
You never know what yer gonna get. A Saturday like today is why I love College Football. Let's take a look at the Top Ten.

#1 Ohio State defeats Northwestern
I watched this one from Riverside Hospital care of my brother and his (not) broken nose thanks to his defending the Bengals honor in the face of some drunk Browns fans. Great work Pat.

#2 Michigan defeats Indiana
We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan...

#3 Louisville LOST to #15 Rutgers
On Thursday night, a last second field goal sealed the victory for Rutgers. Ter is screaming at the TV as we do apple juice/SoCo shots.

#4 Texas LOST to Kansas State
45 - 42. Did anyone want to play defense here?

#5 Auburn LOST to Georgia
Ugly. The lost was 37-15. Yikes.

#6 Flordia (barely) defeats South Carolina
The Gators block an SC field goal to win the game. Nail. Biter. Very exciting.

#7 USC defeats #21 Oregon

#8 Cal LOST to Arizona
With a touchdown called back due to a heel out of bonds, the next play for Cal resulted in a pick with just over a minute left to play. Aw bummer. They can still beat the Trojans in a week or two.

#9 Notre Dame defeats Air Force
Ohh. Wow. Notre. Dame. You. Football. Powerhouse. Hey Quinn, AJ Hawk is bangin' your sister. Sucker!

#10 West Virgina defeats Cincinnati

What a crazy weekend. So let's take a look at the following...

Remaining Unbeatens - 4 TEAMS
OSU (!)
Michigan (who will be a one loss team next weekend)
Rutgers
Boise State

Remaining One Loss - 8 TEAMS
Florida - impending SEC title match with Arkansas
Louisville
West Virgina - still has Rutgers
USC - still has ND, UCLA, and Cal
Notre Dame - only loss is to #2 Michigan, still has USC
Wisconsin - only loss is to #2 Michigan, in my opinion under-rated
Arkansas - still has LSU and impending SEC title match with Florida
Wake Forest - still has Va Tech and Maryland

Most embarassing game of the day
FSU gets blanked by Wake Forest - AT DOAK CAMPBELL! This is the first time Bobby Bowden has been shut out at home in his entire 31 years at FSU.

My Top Ten
#1. Ohio State
#2. Michigan
#3. Florida
#4.
Arkansas
#5. Rutgers
#6. USC
#7. Notre Dame
#8. Louisville
#9. Wisconsin
#10. Wake Forest
(#11. West Virgina, #12 Boise State)

Next 15 on 15
D | Monday, November 06, 2006
The 15 on 15 for the month of November will be Top 15 Travel Destinations. It can be a location that you have been to previously or just somewhere you would like to visit in the future. Please be as specific as possible. Fictional worlds are not allowed (no Narnia, Mordor, Neverland, or Tatooine).

UPDATE: Brooke (and possibly Alex) suggested the following addition and I agree: "
If you were given an all-expense paid trip to anywhere you wanted, what would your top 15 choices be? For us, this will naturally lower places that we've already been because we'd rather use the trip to go to places we have not been."

And just for fun I went back and did a 15 on 15 for June - Top 15 Fictional Characters (with pictures). My list ranges from Captain Picard to Wile E Coyote. Ruvym's original list is here.
