Ohio (Come back to Texas)
D | Wednesday, July 13, 2005
Yesterday on the radio I heard a song from Bowling for Soup called Ohio (Come back to Texas). It has been a while since I was impressed by new music I heard on the radio but here I was singing along after a few refrains. The song is catchy and well written and fun. It is basically the story of a guy who is trying to convince his ex to leave Ohio and come home to Texas. In addition to himself, he lists a bunch of people who want her back: The Bush Twins, NASA, Troy Aikman, etc. Towards the end, and in true Texas style, the song slows down, gets a little twang, and includes a group of "Texas type" folks singing the chorus who (undoubtedly all drunk at a bar) champion our broken-hearted author's crusade of love. This is the point where I totally lost it and could not stop laughing. But the whole thing is great. Give it a listen.

Ohio (Come Back to Texas)
-Bowling for Soup

She said she needed a break
A little time to think
But then she went to Cleveland
With some guy named Leland
That she met at the bank.
There's nothing wrong with Ohio
Except the snow and the rain.
I really like Drew Carey
And I'd love to see
The Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.

So when you're done
Doing whatever
And when you're through
Doing whoever
You know Denton county
Will be right here waiting for you.

(chorus)
Come back to Texas
It's just not the same
Since you went away
Before you lose your accent
And forget all about
The Lonestar state
There's a seat for you at the rodeo
And I've got every slow dance saved
Besides the Mexican food sucks
North of here anyway.

And the song goes on, but I didn't post the rest of the lyrics. And just as side note, why does everyone associate Cleveland exclusively with The Drew Carey Show (yes it was set there, but so what)? They have other stuff (a giant stamp for example).

I am going to test post an audioclip below. Let's see if it works.

It's a catchy tune. I'll have to find a way to listen to the whole thing at some point... I'm sure it will still be playing on the radio when I get back.

Of all the things Cleveland could be know for, I think at least Drew Carey is a positive. Personally, my friends and I refer to Cleveland as 'White Detroit.'

A buddy of mine also introduced me to "Fallout Boys," so if you have a chance check them out (asusming you haven't already). Also I have no idea why I'm leaning so heavily to one side in that picture; it looks pretty weird.

AJ,
I'll check out your guy too. Song suggestions? So you work in Cleveland? Government job or firm? Doing what?

Ah, it's nice to see someone enjoying music from my area. Granted, BFS is certainly not the best the area has to offer (although I like them). If you're interested in Denton County bands (coincidentally, D, my brother lives in Denton County and my parents live in a county southeast of that), then you need to listen to:

Centro-Matic (they are gods, and one of my former professors lived in the dorm with the lead singer)
Slobberbone (now disbanded)
The Drams (formed from remaining members of Slobberbone, they have an early Soul Asylum/early R.E.M. vibe going - very nice)
The Deathray Davies - they just freaking rock
Old 97s (OK, technically from Dallas, not Denton, but still my favorite band in the whole freaking world)

For all the things I dislike about my homestate, at least we've produced some kick-ass music!
