Crunching Ice
D | Wednesday, July 27, 2005
While she is at work, my friend sends me the following question via email: How do you tell a stranger to stop crunching their ice?
I responded with the following: Try this - Stand up suddenly and yell, "Holy SHIT lady! What the Hell? You have been chomping on that ice for like, I don't know, but a long damn time. How about you knock it off, before I come over there, dump that ice on your head, and open up a can of whoop ass on you? You like it? Like it? Yeah, that's what I thought."

I am an ice cruncher and let me be the first to apologize for the inconsiderate behavior. Please note, this behavior is like an addiction, a craving, a desire a must. I find myself purchasing bags of ice to take home. I request cups of ice to take home from restaurants. I perfer to crunch ice than drink soda, tea, jucie or water. Thank you for letting me know how annoying this is to others. I will try hard to find a solution to this problem. I ask that maybe you consinder the person crunching the ice may not be aware of the problem and may find it as addictive as I do. People have strange habits. You may not be aware of yours.

I am a person that crunches on ice also - it is a habit and it is soothing to me especially when I am stressed! I also have a iron deficiency and while this is not good - I know that but it is habit forming. There is only one person in an office near that says she hears it - tell why no one else does. I hve stopped and only crunch when she is out of the office on certain days and still no one else hears anything!

I never knew there was a rash of ice crunching going on in corporate America. How strange.
Also, this post is from like 6 months ago. How are people finding this? Am I google-able under "ice crunching"?

So how come drinking 8 glasses of water is recommended, but ice consumption is considered a "condition"? Is it only pagophagia when this is the person's only form of intake? The only condition I can think of with eating ice is the annoyance to others.

Crunching ice is a sign of being anemic, having low iron. Keep that in mind every time you refill that cup with ice.

Please remember crunching ice may be a problem for you...but as an ice cruncher myself..I have issues with folks in the adjacent cubes who crunch carrots, chips, slurp coffee, soup or whatever. AND I have a sensitive nose. As a non-smoker...the folks who sneak out for a quick butt...reek when then come back in. Oh by the way...Bob..quit farting over there..my cube doesn't have a ceiling and I'm getting quite a whif most days!!!

I am a crazy ice cruncher fo the last 11 years now, starting with the birth of my 2nd son. It drives my husband crazy most times, esp if he is trying to go to sleep at night and I am in bed watching TV and crunching away! The craziest part is that i add saccharin to it ti make it sweet...I also drink coffee and eat ice at the same time for breakfast! How to quit??

I have crunched ice for five years now. It started when I first became vegetarian. I guess that connects it to the "low iron" theory. I have stopped freezing ice in my house, cause I'm trying to quit the habit, but whenever I go to a hotel, I always go straight for the ice machine. I've heard that eating ice can lead to Gall Stones - hence the reason I am trying to quit. Apart from that, I love eating ice soo much that I could do it all day. Any suggestions please let me know, thanks.

I am an ice cruncher...and it has become an addiction. I did this in high school, and my mother made me quit... I started again about 18 mos ago (when I became anemic) and have not been able to quit. I do not have a deisre to, and find that I drink stuff just to have the ice. I also get several glasses of ice a day and keep them at my desk. I am sorry if anyone is annoyed by this, but kicking the habit is VERY difficult.

I thought I was the only one who drinks hot coffee and crunches on a bucket of ice at the same time. It's like my ultimate snack. My auto ice maker has been broken for 2 days now. I am so depressed because it made the BEST cubes. I have to resort to cubes from am/pm or ice bags. I am waiting for my replacement ice maker motor to arrive so I can be back in business:)

I understand that there is an addiction happening here but I am a victim of a nearby cubeworker who does it ALL DAY LONG. I am at my wits end. I am thinking of printing this string of posts out and putting it on her chair. To the ice crunchers out there, how can I tell my coworker that this habit that you have is worse than nails on a chalkboard to me, it actually makes me sick to my stomach!

FIRST OFF -- "D", yes, your post comes up FIRST when you google "crunching ice" ~ FYI.
I've been told that I'm most likely anemic (low iron)...and I'm definitely going to check it out...but I've always loved to crunch ice...but in the last few months its been REALLY BAD!!!
I'm a gastric bypass post op...so I'm guessing I'm missing some major nutrients. Thanks for sharing everyone!!
Now I need to look up if its dangerous for my TEETH!
Thanks for starting it "D"!!!
